A new character appears in Downtown, on the street by the Bank of Night City. The spawn point has a welcome area for newcomers: rows of bamboo hide the dumpsters, the NEONESIS letters and a light strip glow, and there are flowers and benches around. Everything you need at the start is a few minutes' walk away: the bank, the job center, the courier depot, an ATM and a parking lot around the corner.
#What you start with
- 5,000 €$ in cash. Not enough for a car of your own yet: the cheapest one at a dealership costs 6,500 €$, so ride the free starter vehicles first. Your bank account is empty for now, and you don't have a bank card yet.
- Worn clothes. An old windbreaker, a camo T-shirt, frayed jeans and sneakers. For your first 120 minutes of play you can't throw them away, give them away or trade them.
- A place in the city, but no phone. Rita hands out phones: getting yours is your first quest.
#Your first hour: what to do
- Talk to Rita. She stands on the corner by the bank, right where you appear. Walk up and press E: Rita gives you a phone, and you get a number of your own. The ↑ arrow key takes the phone out.
- Stop by the bank. The Bank of Night City is in the lobby next door. Get a bank card for 300 €$: without it the ATMs and transfers from the phone don't work, and in shops and taxis it pays once your cash runs out. Then put some of your cash into your account: businesses can only be bought from the account, homes and cars are paid from it first, and the city pays you for the card and the first deposit with the “Money in the bank” quest.
- Get a job. The job center is in a hotel lobby a little way up the street. As a newcomer you can work as a courier: the courier depot is right by the bank.
- Eat. Hunger and thirst grow while you're in the city. 24/7 kiosks and diners are marked on the map (M) and in the GPS app.
- Find some wheels. Until you have a car of your own, take a free vehicle from the starter lot: it's close by, on the sidewalk along the palm promenade of Corpo Plaza.
Together these steps make up the chain of starter quests: the city pays 4,350 €$ for it.
#Free vehicles for newcomers
There are always 6 free cars and motorbikes parked by the spawn point. Take any one that's free: it's yours for as long as you use it.
| Model | Class | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Makigai MaiMai P126 | Compact | 2 |
| Brennan Apollo | Motorcycles | 4 |
- Only one of them can be yours at a time, even across all your characters. If you get into another one, with any of your characters, the previous one goes back to the lot.
- If nobody uses a starter vehicle for 15 minutes, it goes back to its spot and is free again.
- You can't park it in a garage, lock it, call it with your phone or sell it. It doesn't count as your car.
More on the Starter vehicles page.
#How your character grows
- XP for time in the city: 10 points every 10 minutes of play, unless you're away from the keyboard.
- XP for work: every paid order gives XP both to your character and to the job itself.
- XP for quests: the starter quests get you your first levels.
Your character's level unlocks new jobs: taxi driver at level 2, cash collector at level 8. The XP table for each level is on the Character and name page.
#What to know right away
- Names are hidden. You don't know someone's name until they introduce themselves: above their head you see “Stranger” and a number. How introductions work: read Acquaintances and names.
- This is role-play. Your character lives in 2077 and knows nothing about the server, the admins or Discord. Before you play, read the rules and the RP terms.
- A question for the admins: press F3 for the “Reports” window.
