Install and join the server

Neonesis RP is free: there's no subscription and no paid access. The only thing you buy is the game itself. The server runs on top of regular Cyberpunk 2077: the city, the cars and the characters are the same, while everything role-play (money, jobs, factions, housing) is stored and checked by the server.

#What you need

  • Cyberpunk 2077 and the Phantom Liberty expansion, bought on Steam. When you join, the server uses a signed Steam ticket to check that your account owns both the game and the expansion. Without the expansion you can't get in.
  • The Steam version only. The GOG and Epic Games Store versions aren't supported yet.
  • One Steam account, one server account. You can have up to 3 characters on it. Up to 4 people can play at the same time from one IP address.
  • A microphone for voice chat. You can play without one, but voice is the main way people role-play here.

#How to start playing

  1. Download the Neonesis launcher from neonesis-rp.ru.
  2. Sign in with Steam. Your Steam account is how the server knows the game is yours.
  3. Install everything you need to play on the server, right from the launcher.
  4. Play: start the game from the launcher, confirm the sign-in with a code from your authenticator app and create a character.

#Signing in with a code

Every account on the server is protected with a second factor: besides Steam, signing in takes a six-digit code from an authenticator app. There's no password, and the code changes every 30 seconds.

  1. Install an authenticator app on your phone or computer: Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Bitwarden, Aegis or 2FAS.
  2. The first time you join, the server shows a QR code. Scan it with the app, or copy the secret key and add it by hand (in Bitwarden: into the login's TOTP field).
  3. Type the code the app shows right now.
  4. Save your backup codes. There are 8 of them, and each one replaces the app's code once. They're shown only this once: keep them in a password manager or write them down.
  • The code screen has a “Trust this PC for 30 days” switch, on from the start. Then after a correct code this computer is trusted for 30 days: you won't be asked for a code all that time. On a new computer, and after that, you'll be asked again.
  • If you play on a shared or someone else's computer, turn the switch off: the code is then asked at every join.
  • What gets trusted is this computer under your Windows user. A copy of the game folder on another computer or under another Windows user isn't trusted: it asks for the code.
  • Instead of the app's code you can type a backup code like XXXXX-XXXXX.
  • After 5 wrong codes the sign-in locks for 15 minutes. If it happens again the same day, it locks for an hour, then 4 hours, and after that a whole day.
  • If someone typed wrong codes for your account since your last visit, the chat tells you at your next sign-in: “Someone tried to sign in to your account since your last visit (wrong codes: N)”. If it wasn't you, change your authenticator in F2.
  • In F2, on the “Settings” tab, the “Two-factor protection” card shows until when this computer is trusted and how many backup codes are left. There you can also get new backup codes or move to another app: that takes a code from your current app or a backup code. While this computer is trusted, the card also has a “Forget this PC” button: the next join from it asks for the code again. On a shared computer, press it before you leave.
  • The game connects only to the real Neonesis server: when you start it from the launcher, the server has to prove its key. If it doesn't, the game won't connect, and the window says “Not let in: the server didn't prove it is the real one”. Start the game from the launcher again, and if it happens again, write on the forum.
  • The protection can't be turned off. If you've lost both the app and the backup codes, contact the administration on the forum: they'll reset it, and you'll set it up again.

#In the game

Delete opens the Neonesis window, in the game's main menu too (you can change the key in the settings). The “Server” tab shows which server you're connected to and has a “Disconnect” button. The “Character” tab is where you pick and create characters.

#Creating a character

On the “Character” tab, press “New character” and fill in your character's documents:

FieldRules
First name2 to 16 letters, Latin or Cyrillic
Last nameSame rules as the first name
Date of birthDay, month and year: the character is 18 to 80 years old
BodyFemale or male
  • The date of birth stays with the character for good, and their age counts from it. The name can be changed once a month later.
  • If a character was made before the server started asking for dates of birth, you're asked for it once when you join.

Which names are allowed and how to change yours is covered on the Character and name page.

Press “Create the character” and the city starts loading. A new character opens the game's own full appearance editor right in the world: face, hair, body. When you're done, confirm your choice and the server saves your look. Every time you join after that, it loads by itself while your character is being prepared on screen.

#What's different from single-player

  • Saving is off. The game doesn't save or load its own saves while you're on the server: the server keeps everything that's yours.
  • No fast travel. Fast travel terminals don't work: you get around the city in your own vehicle or by taxi.
  • No photo mode and no pause. Esc opens the game menu, but the world around you keeps going. That menu only lets you resume, open the settings or exit to the main menu, and exiting to the main menu disconnects you from the server.
  • No random pedestrians or traffic. The only Night City locals are the ones at their posts: vendors, bartenders, doctors. Players fill the streets.
  • The map on M works, and the server's places are marked on it with their own icons.
