#Starter clothes

A new character steps into the city in worn-out clothes:

For the first 120 minutes of play, you can't throw them away, give them away, trade them or put them in a wardrobe, a trunk or a faction stash. If you buy another of the same item, the extra one can go into your own wardrobe or your own car's trunk right away: only the ones you were given are held. Like anything else a new character has, it can't be given, traded or thrown away until those minutes are up: see Trading and giving money.

#Wearing clothes

You put clothes on from the inventory (Tab): “Use”, a double-click or a drag onto the slot. Each piece takes its own slot: head, face, outerwear, shirt, legs, feet. A whole-body outfit goes into a slot of its own, “Outfit”, under your character's figure.

  • If the slot is taken, what was there goes back into your pockets.
  • Things you wear weigh nothing.
  • A piece you don't need can be taken off and thrown away at once: “Take off and throw away” in the item's menu. It doesn't need room in your pockets.
  • The server remembers what you wear: after you leave the game, your clothes stay the same.

#Faction uniforms

The police, medics, City Hall, N54 News and Arasaka's security get a uniform when they go on duty. It goes on over your own clothes and comes off when you go off duty. A whole-body outfit of your own comes off for the shift, and after it all your own clothes are back on you. More in the Factions section.

#Clothes shops

The city has 15 clothes shops, and together they sell 1,000 items of clothing from the game itself: hats, glasses and masks, jackets and coats, shirts, pants and skirts, shoes and whole-body outfits. The items keep the game's own names.

  • Each shop sells what that shop's vendor sold in the game, so the range depends on the district: street wear in Watson, suits downtown, gang styles on their turf, nomad gear in the Badlands.
  • Prices go from 60 €$ to 75,000 €$. The game's iconic pieces cost the most.
  • Every item has a quality, from common to legendary, and a style: street, formal, biker, military, gang looks and more.
  • Every clothes shop sells backpacks too.

#The fitting room

  1. Walk up to the seller and press E. The goods are sorted into categories: hats, glasses and masks, outerwear, shirts, pants and skirts, shoes, outfits and backpacks.
  2. Pick an item and press “Try on”: you're wearing it at once.
  3. “Look at yourself” turns the camera to face your character: you see them whole, head and hair, hat or mask included. Turn around with the ← → arrows or the buttons, and move the camera with “Nearer” and “Farther”. “Back to the shop” returns you to the goods.
  4. Like it? Press “Buy and wear”. “Only buy” puts the item into your pockets.
  • “Buy and wear” swaps the piece in its slot at once, and the old one goes into your pockets. If there's no room for it there, the purchase doesn't go through and no money is taken.
  • If you already have the same piece in your pockets, the button says “Wear” and nothing is bought. On a piece you're already wearing, it says “On you”.
  • Only you see what you try on: other players see only the clothes you've bought and put on.
  • When you leave the shop, your own clothes come back by themselves. To get them back sooner, press “My own clothes”.
  • You pay in cash first, the rest from your bank card.

You change your face, hairstyle, makeup and tattoos at a barbershop.
